Alpha Athletics 7v7 Tournament Rules & Information
Equipment
Mouthpieces and soft-shell helmets are highly recommended.
Teams must bring their own footballs, and they must be the correct size for the division.
Divisions & Roster
Players may be double-rostered due to combined age groups.
8U & 9U only: Each team receives 4 downs instead of 3.
Game Format
Each team plays 2 games per night.
Games start promptly at the top and bottom of each hour.
Running clock: 22 minutes. Clock only stops for injuries or official timeouts.
If a timeout is used for instruction, game time may be extended (max 24 minutes total).
No overtime. Ties are recorded as a tie.
Clock & Timeouts
Each team is allowed 1 timeout per game (1 minute).
40 seconds between plays. Delay of game results in loss of down.
Field Setup
Field is 50 yards total:
40-yard playing field
10-yard end zone
First down markers at 25-yard line and 10-yard line.
Scoring
Touchdown (standard): 6 points
Touchdown from 40-yard line: 8 points
Extra Point (from 5-yard line): 1 point
Extra Point (from 10-yard line): 2 points
Interception: 2 points
Interception returned for TD: 6 points
If defense intercepts an extra point attempt, they are awarded the same point value the offense attempted (1 or 2 points).
Offense Rules
QB has 4 seconds to throw. If not, it’s a sack. Play is dead and ball is placed back at original LOS.
No INTs are allowed after the 4-second mark.
Offense has 3 downs to gain a first down (except 8U & 9U with 4 downs).
Once inside the 10-yard line, offense has 3 downs to score.
1 run play or rush allowed per team per game.
QB cannot run the ball. If QB crosses the tee, it’s an illegal forward pass.
No toss passes, reverses, or hook-and-ladder plays.
Offense starts at the 40-yard line after every change of possession.
Must use legal football formations—no 5 receivers stacked on one side.
Motion penalties follow standard football rules.
Ball must be snapped from a tee, or by a teammate from the tee.
Defense Rules
One-hand touch to down the ball carrier (must be from shoulders down).
No tackling or physically taking down a player. Penalty:
1st offense: Automatic 1st down at the next marker (25, 10, or half the distance inside 10).
2nd offense (same player): Player is ejected.
No blocking allowed. Loss of down.
After a fumbled snap, the ball can be recovered and played within the 4-second window.
Fumbles after a catch = dead ball.
Coaching Rules
1 Offensive Coach allowed on the field.
Up to 3 kneeling players behind the coach are permitted.
Coach must stand behind the offensive huddle.
No defensive coaches allowed on the field for 10U and up.
1st offense: warning
2nd offense: 15-yard penalty
Sideline behavior:
1st sideline warning: verbal warning
2nd: 10-yard penalty (or half the distance to goal)
3rd: coach ejected
Sportsmanship & Conduct
NO fighting: Entire team will be disqualified.
Any player who throws a punch is immediately ejected and must leave the fields.
Cheating in any form = automatic team disqualification.
